Nick finished packing up his stuff.
He carried his bags out to his SUV. He went back up and looked around the house. He didn’t want to do it but he had
to sell the house. It held too many memories of her. His wife, Emily, died two weeks ago in a car accident. She was on her
way to a doctor’s appointment. She was seven months pregnant with their first child when a drunk driver ran into her.
She died on the way to the hospital. The drunk driver was arrested and in jail for involuntary manslaughter of two persons.
Nick and Emily were so happy together. When Nick got the call about Emily, he was devastated. He broke down in Brian’s
arms as his best friend held him. The guys have been there for Nick ever since he got the news. The two weeks went by in a
blur and now here he was standing at the door looking around the house that he shared with his wife. He always loved coming
home knowing she was here waiting for him. He always looked forward to getting home. Now he didn’t want to go home.
Brian was nice enough to let him stay with him and his wife and son. Brian came up behind Nick as Nick looked around the house.
“Hey Frack, are you done packing?” Brian asked.
“Yeah, just looking around,” Nick said.
“Howie’s got the condo ready for you, they are waiting over there for us,” Brian said.
“It’s hard leaving this place, so many memories,” Nick said.
“I know, man, I know, she was my best friend,” Brian said.
“How do I go on?” Nick asked.
“Take it a day at a time, man,” Brian said.
“I have to, Emily would want me to go on,” Nick said. Nick closed the door and locked it and headed over
to the condo with Brian. That night after the guys left, Nick stood out on the balcony looking out at the ocean. He knew he
would have a hard time moving on but he would take it one day at a time and it would be one of the hardest things he had to
do.
