Hayley walked down the street to her best friend, Nick's house. She just found out that she was moving away to California. She and Nick were juniors in high school. She went up to the door and rang the doorbell. The door opened and Nick stood there.

"Hey Hayley," Nick said. She went in and he closed the door.

"Where is everybody?" Hayley said as she noticed the house was quiet.

"My parents took everyone out to eat, I need to study for that test on Monday," Nick said. Hayley sat down.

"Hey, what's wrong," Nick said.

"I'm moving, Nicky, my parents and I are moving to California," Hayley said.

"What," Nick said.

"I don't want to go, I begged them to let me stay but they don't want to be away from me since I'm their only child," Hayley said.

"I can have my mom and dad talk to them, you can live here with us," Nick said.

"I tried that, but they want me with them, even if your parents talked to them, my parents will say no," Hayley said.

"I can't believe this!" Nick said getting up and walking around.

"Nick, I'm sorry, I want to stay here, I really do, but I can't," Hayley said.

"When do you leave?" Nick asked.

"The end of the month, which is two weeks, my dad has to be out there right away, it's his job that's making him go out there, they have a house out there already, they've already started packing," Hayley said. Nick stood there. Hayley stood up and went over to him.

"I need to be alone, Hayley," Nick said. Hayley, knowing him too well, nodded and left the house and went home and laid on the bed.

Two weeks later, it was the night before Hayley was leaving, Nick and his family were having a going away party for Hayley and her parents. Hayley asked to spend the night at the Carters'. Her parents said it was okay as long as she was home first thing in the morning. Hayley and Nick were out in his garage apartment. He locked the doors and closed the windows. Hayley sat there staring at the walls.

"I can't believe that tomorrow, I will leaving for California, I wish I didn't have to go," Hayley said.

"Don't go home tomorrow, don't leave, stay here, I will cover for you," Nick said.

"Nick, I have to go, my parents will find me, I can't have your parents mad at you," Hayley said. Nick got up and walked around.

"Hayley, you are my best friend, I don't know what I would do without you, how can I do anything without you, I looked forward to us graduating together and going off to college together, just doing everything together, I will have no one to hang out with, no friends," Nick said. Hayley got up and walked over to him.

"Nick, give me something to remember you by," Hayley said.

"What do you mean," Nick said. Hayley held up a silver package.

"Remember our promise when we entered high school, if we are ever going to be separated, we be each other's firsts, it's that time, Nicky," Hayley said. Nick stood there looking at her.

Chapter 2

Hayley stood there looking at Nick and holding the silver package. He looked at her.

"Hayley, are you sure about this?" Nick asked.

"Nick, we promised each other, and I know we don't break each other's promises, you never have broken a promise to me and I haven't broken a promise to you, I am sure, be my first and make love to me, Nicky," Hayley said. He took her into his arms and kissed her deeply. He picked her up and she wrapped her legs around his waist as he moved to the bed and laid down and they kissed passionately and deeply as he began removing her clothes. She laid there naked while he removed his clothes and they kissed hungrily. He slipped the condom onto his body and he gently and slowly made love to her. He laid on top of her and kissed her deeply. He got up and went into the bathroom and he came back and got into bed and pulled her close. They fell asleep holding onto each other, not wanting to let go of each other. The next morning, they got up and got dressed and he walked her to her house and saw the moving truck. He went in with her and helped move some of her stuff. Soon it was time for them to go. Hayley's parents hugged Nick. They got into the car. Hayley and Nick hugged for a long time. Hayley got into the car and Nick watched them drive off. He walked home and his mother met him at the door. She hugged him as he cried.

"How can I go on without my best friend, Mom," Nick said.

"You can write and call her," Jane said.

"It's not the same, she's not here with me!" Nick said.

Two years went by, Nick was now a part of a music group called the Backstreet Boys. Nick hasn't heard from Hayley since she left and he tried to find her but came up with nothing. He finally found her parents and her mother said that Hayley left home and she hasn't heard from her. Hayley's mom thought she would be coming back to Florida but it's been almost two years since she left home. Nick was worried and scared that something happened to his best friend. Nick and the guys were in California for interviews. He got Hayley's parents' address and on a free day, he went to their house. He rang the doorbell and the door opened and Hayley's mom stood there.

"Hi Laura," Nick said. Laura hugged him and he went in and she closed the door.

"Hi Steve," Nick said. He shook Nick's hand and they sat down.

"This was the letter she left us when she left home," Laura said. She handed him the letter. Nick opened it and read it.

Dear Mom and Dad, as you are reading this, I am gone. I don't know where I will end up but I can't stay here any more. I have hurt you guys and I can't be here now. I have changed alot and you won't like it. I felt that I should leave and be on my own. I have taken my GED so you don't have to worry that I dropped out of school. I can still go to college so don't worry that I won't get to. I had to leave to save you two the heartache of me being around. You wouldn't want me after what I have done and what has happened. I am sorry but I will be fine, I will keep in touch. Love always, Hayley.

Nick looked at them. He handed the letter back to Laura.

"She never got in touch with us, we are sitting wondering if she's even still alive," Laura said.

"I have to find her," Nick said.

"We have private investigators looking for her," Laura said.

"I will help, I have to, she is my best friend, I miss her alot," Nick said.

"This letter is for you, she asked us to mail it to you on a certain date, and that was today," Laura said. He opened the letter and read it.

Dear Nick, I miss you so much. Something happened on that night we made love. Well, how do I put this, well, the protection didn't really protect, I just found out that I am pregnant, that is why I am running away from home. I can't be here and my parents can't know that I am pregnant, they will hate me for life, they can't know so don't tell them. I will call you on the day you should receive the letter after my mom has mailed it, I will tell you where we are. I have been secretly keeping in touch with BJ. I made her promise not to tell you, so don't be mad at her. So I will be calling you and if you aren't there, I will ask BJ how to get in touch with you so I can call you. Love always, Hayley. Nick smiled and looked at Laura and Steve.

"She's going to call me, as soon as she knows that I have received this letter, she's been in touch with BJ, I have to get home now," Nick said. He said bye and ran out the door and ran back to the hotel where Brian and Kevin stopped him.

"Whoa, Nick, what's going on," Kevin said.

"Do you remember me talking about Hayley, she's going to call me, I have to get home now," Nick said. They read the letter.

"You are in luck, we leave for Florida in the morning," Kevin said.

"I have to go tonight, it's important," Nick said.

"I'll see what we can do," Kevin said.

An hour later, Nick was on a plane home to Florida. He couldn't wait to get home and await the call from Hayley. He knew what he really wanted.

Chapter 3

Nick arrived home and ran into the house and looked around. BJ came in from the kitchen.

"Nick," BJ said.

"Did Hayley call?" Nick asked.

"No," BJ said.

"I need to see the letters she wrote to you," Nick said.

"Nick," BJ said.

"BJ, now!" Nick said. She went upstairs and came back down and gave them to him. He looked at the return address.

"So she was this Amber person who kept writing you," Nick said.

"Yeah," BJ said.

"Does she still live at this address?" Nick asked.

"Yeah," BJ said. Nick ran out the door and got on a flight to Dallas, Texas. He got off the plane and rented a car and drove to Garland. He pulled up in front of a house and got out and looked at it. He went up to the door and rang the doorbell. The door opened and Hayley stood there.

        “Hayley!” Nick said hugging her.

        “How did you find me so soon,” Hayley said.

        “Your letters to BJ, I made her go get them to let me see them,” Nick said.

        “I was going to call you sooner, but I was scared to,” Hayley said.

        “Why,” Nick said.

        “Come in,” Hayley said. He went in and looked around.

        “How long have you lived here?” Nick asked.

        “Since I left my parents,” Hayley said.

        “The letter they gave me said you were pregnant,” Nick said. Hayley sat down.

        “I lost the baby, when I was six weeks along, I was in a car accident,” Hayley said.

        “Why didn’t you call me or anything, why did you have to hide from all of us,” Nick said.

        “I didn’t want to ruin your life, I didn’t want my parents hating me, they wanted me to wait until I was married before I got pregnant, but I didn’t,” Hayley said.

        “You could have called me,” Nick said.

        “I couldn’t, I wanted to, but I couldn’t, I don’t know why,” Hayley said.

        “Hayley, I can’t believe this,’ Nick said.

        “I’m sorry, Nick, I wish I could go back and change things, but I can’t,” Hayley said.

        “Come back with me, Hayley, I need you with me,” Nick said.

Hayley stood there looking at Nick. She sat there looking at her hands. She looked at him again.

        “How do you need me, Nick?” Hayley asked.

        “I need you with me as my girlfriend, my lover, and someday, my wife,” Nick said.

        “Nick,” Hayley said.

        “I am in love with you, Hayley, I know you are the one for me, I felt it the night we made love, I never stopped feeling that way, there has been no other girl for me, only you,” Nick said.

        “I feel the same way,” Hayley said. He kissed her deeply.

        “We will be happy, Hayley, I will never hurt you,” Nick said. Hayley kissed him.

        “Make love to me, Nicky,” Hayley said. He carried her to her bedroom and they removed each other’s clothes and he gently made love to her. Two weeks later, they were on their way to Florida. Hayley held Nick’s hand and she knew they would never be apart again.
