What Makes You Different
When I Said I Do
Where Would You Be
With You

I arrived at my ex-boyfriend’s house.  Nick and I broke up a month ago and I just found out that I was three months pregnant with his child.  I rang the doorbell.  A blond girl opened the door.

“May I help you?” she asked.

      “Is Nick here?” I asked.

      “Yes, come in,” she said.

      “Thanks,” I said.

“I’m Mandy, what’s your name?” she said.

“It’s Bri, I’m his ex-girlfriend, I just need to talk to him, I’m not here to get him back, there’s something he needs to know,” I said.

“Come on,” Mandy said.  I followed her out back.  Nick was sitting by the pool.

“Nick, Bri’s here to see you,” Mandy said.  She went back inside.  Nick stood up.

“What are you doing here?” Nick asked.

“I have to tell you something,” I said.

      “What is it?” Nick asked.

“I’m three months pregnant,” I said.

      “You’re what!” Nick said.

      “You heard me,” I said.

“When did you find out?” Nick asked.

      “This morning,” I said.

      “Oh god,” Nick said.

“I’m sorry I even told you, it’s obvious that you don’t care about me anymore or care that I’m pregnant with your baby, I’ll just go, goodbye,” I said. I walked back inside and through the house.

      “Bri,” Mandy said.

“Nice meeting you, Mandy, be careful with Nick, okay,” I said.  I walked out the door and went home.

Six months later, I was nine months along and sitting in my living room.  The doorbell rang.  I started to get up when my water broke.  I sat back down and felt a contraction.  The doorbell rang again.

“It’s open!” I called.  Nick came in.

“We have to talk,” Nick said.  I looked at him.

“No time, need to go to the hospital,” I said.

      “What,” Nick said.

“I’m in labor, my water just broke, I need to get to the hospital, now,” I said in pain. He helped me up and helped me out to his Durango and drove to the hospital.  He helped me into the hospital.

“May I help you?” a nurse asked.

“Yes, I need Dr. Kelly, I’m in labor,” I said breathing heavily.  She paged Dr. Kelly.  She got me a wheelchair and I sat down.  I looked up at Nick.

“You can go if you want, I’m sure you don’t want to be here,” I said.

“How could you say that, you’re having my baby, I want to be here,” Nick said.  I smiled a little.

“Then don’t leave me now,” I said grabbing his hand.

“I won’t,” Nick said.  The nurse wheeled me to a room.  Nick helped me up on the bed.  The nurse got Nick scrubs to put on.  Dr. Kelly came in and checked me over.

“Okay, Bri, you are ready, this next contraction, you are going to push, okay,” Dr. Kelly said.

“Okay,” I said. The contraction came and I pushed.  Nick held my hand. I kept pushing.

“I can see the head, Bri, keep going,” Dr. Kelly said.  I kept pushing.  I pushed until I heard a wail fill the room.  I laid back against the pillows.

“It’s a girl,” Dr. Kelly said. I smiled.  They cleaned her up and wrapped her in my arms.  I smiled as I watched her.

“She’s perfect,” I said.  I felt Nick kiss my forehead.  I looked up at him. He was smiling.   He kissed her head.  They took her to the nursery.  I went to sleep.  Nick called everyone and told them the news.  Mandy came to the hospital.  Nick sat down with her.

      “Nick,” Mandy said.

“I’m a father, Mandy, I have a daughter,” Nick said.

“That’s great, so what happens now,” Mandy said.

“Well, I have to be there for Bri and my daughter, they need my support,” Nick said.

“You’re breaking up with me, aren’t you,” Mandy said.

“I have to, Mandy, I don’t want you to miss out on anything, you can go out with other guys and find a guy who’s right for you, you deserve better, I can’t give you what you want, I’m sorry,” Nick said.

“It’s okay, you’re right, you need to be there for Bri and your daughter, I understand, friends,” Mandy said.

“Friends,” Nick said.  She left. Nick went to Bri’s room. She was awake and looking at a baby book.

“Hey, I’m looking for a name, how about Emily,” I said.

“That’s a great name, Emily Hardin,” Nick said.

“What, I was thinking Emily Carter,” I said.

“You want her to have my name,” Nick said.

“Yeah, she’s your daughter,” I said.

“Okay, Emily Carter, what about a middle name?” Nick asked.

“How about Jane, Emily Jane Carter,” I said.

“After my mother, she’ll like that,” Nick said.  The door opened and Jane and Bob came in.

“Hey, where’s our granddaugther,” Jane said.

“In the nursery, Mom, we decided on a name, her name is going to be Emily Jane Carter,” Nick said. Jane smiled and hugged Nick.

“I love it, congratulations, honey,” Jane said.

“Thanks, Mom,” Nick said.  Bob hugged Nick.

      “Congratulations, son,” Bob said.

“Thanks, Dad,” Nick said.  Jane hugged me.

      “Congratulations, Bri,” Jane said.

“Thanks, Jane,” I said. The door opened and the nurse brought the baby bed in.

“Look who I have,” she said.  Jane and Bob saw the baby. They smiled.  The nurse lifted the baby out and laid her in my arms.

“Here she is, Jane,” I said.

“She’s so beautiful, can I hold her?” Jane asked.

“Sure,” I said.  Jane lifted her out and held her.

“She looks like you, Bri, she’s perfect,” Jane said.

      “I know,” I said.

“She has Nick’s eyes,” Jane said.

      “Really,” Bob said.

“She has blue eyes, and I bet she’ll have blond hair,” Jane said.

“Maybe,” I said.  Nick sat down beside me on the bed.

The next day, I woke up and looked at the baby bed and saw the baby gone.  I sat up. Nick was asleep on the cot beside my bed.  Dr. Kelly came in.

“Bri, where’s the baby?” Dr. Kelly asked.

“That’s what I would like to know,” I said.  I woke Nick up.  He sat up.

      “What’s going on?” Nick asked.

      “The baby’s gone,” I said.

      “What,” Nick said getting up.

“I’ll go check around, I’ll be back,” Dr. Kelly said.

I sat there with tears in my eyes.

“They’ll find her, she couldn’t have gotten up and walked off,” Nick said.

“Nick, our daughter’s missing and you want to be funny,” I said.

“I wasn’t trying to be funny, I’ll go look for her,” Nick said.  He left the room. Dr. Kelly came back in and Nick behind her.

“I searched the hospital and talked to every nurse, she’s gone, she’s not in the hospital,” Dr. Kelly said.

“I want my baby,” I said.

“I have every nurse on alert, we’ll find her,” Dr. Kelly said.  She left the room.  Jane came in with Bob.

“Bri, Nick, what’s going on?” Jane asked.

“Emily’s missing, she was taken in the middle of night, Bri woke up and saw her gone, Dr. Kelly searched the hospital, nothing,” Nick said sitting down next to me on the bed. I leaned against him.  He kissed my head.  Jane and Bob sat down.  Three hours later, Dr. Kelly came back in.

“We found a nurse who was on duty all night, she said she came in and checked on the baby and Emily was here, then when she was at the nurses’ station, she thought she saw a blond haired girl come in here and left holding a blanket,” Dr. Kelly said. Nick looked at her.  He got up and went out the door.  An hour later, he came back in with the baby.  Dr. Kelly came over.

      “Nick,” Dr. Kelly said.

“Mandy had her, she wanted her because she was mine, Mandy’s in jail now,” Nick said laying Emily in my arms.  I kissed her forehead.

“Why would she do this?” I asked.

“I just told you that, Emily’s my daughter, Mandy wanted me back, I broke up with her yesterday,” Nick said. Dr. Kelly left the room.  Jane took Emily and laid her in the baby bed and left the room with Bob.

“Why did you break up with her?” I asked.

“So that I can be here for you and Emily, so that Mandy can have the guy she deserves, not a guy with a baby,” Nick said. I looked at my hands.

“Is that the real reason?” I asked.

“No, because I’m still in love with you,” Nick said.

“I still love you, Nick,” I said.  He sat down. He cupped my face in his hands.  He kissed me softly.  The kiss deepened.  He pulled back.

“I missed you so much,” Nick said.

“I missed you, too, I want to be with you again, Nick, I can’t stand to be without you,” I said.

“I want to be with you, too, I can’t stand to be without you,” Nick said.  We kissed again.

Five years later, Emily was five years old.  Nick and I got married two months after Emily was born and I was expecting our second child.  I was seven months along. Nick came in with Emily.

“Mommy!” Emily said running to me.

“Hey sweetie, how was your day,” I said as she sat next to me.  She hugged me.

“It was great, I had a blast today, today was show and tell, I told them that Daddy was a Backstreet Boy and everyone started asking me questions, and everyone wanted my autograph since I’m his daughter, I tried to write my name, but it was not good but I gave them autographs,” Emily said.  I smiled.

      “You’re famous now,” I said.

“I know, like Daddy!” Emily said.

“Yeah,” I said.  She ran up to her room. Nick sat next to me and rubbed my stomach.

      “Baby kicking?” Nick asked.

“Won’t stop,” I said putting my hand on my stomach.

“Do you think it’s a boy or a girl?” Nick asked.

“It’s doesn’t matter as long as the baby’s healthy,” I said rubbing my stomach.

Two months later, it was two days past my due date.  Nick was at the studio with the guys recording another album.  Emily was playing.  I felt a contraction.

“Emily, get the phone, please,” I said. She got the phone and I dialed the number of the studio.

      “Hello,” Max said.

      “Max, it’s Britney, where’s Nick?” I asked.

“They are recording a song right now,” Max said.

“He needs to come home now,” I said.

“Bri, are you in labor?” Max asked.

      “Yes, I am,” I said.

“I’ll get him, okay, bye,” Max said.  I hung up and felt another contraction.  Emily sat beside me.

      “Mommy,” Emily said.

“The baby’s coming, Emily,” I said.  I felt my water break.

“Em, honey, get some towels,” I said.

I felt the head coming.  I panicked.

“Oh, god, Nick, hurry,” I said.  Emily came back with some towels. I sat on the towels. She handed me the phone. I dialed Nick’s cell phone number.

      “Hello,” Nick said.

“Nick, where are you!” I said.

“I’m stuck in traffic, I’m coming,” Nick said.

“Nick, my water broke, I can feel the head, hurry, please,” I said.

“Oh god, I’m trying, baby, I’m trying, just hang on,” Nick said.

“Hurry please,” I said.  I hung up and called 911.

      “911,” the lady said.

“Yes, hi, this is Britney Carter, I need an ambulance, I’m in labor, my water broke and I can feel the head, my husband is stuck in traffic, I need help,” I said.

“Okay, I just dispatched the ambulance, is there anyone with you?” the lady asked.

“My five year old daughter,” I said.

“Do you have a neighbor?” the lady asked.

“Emily, get Mrs. Bennett,” I said.  She ran out the door and came back with Mrs. Bennett.

“Okay, my neighbor is here,” I said.

“Mommy’s water broke and she can feel it coming,” Emily said to Mrs. Bennett.

“Where’s Nick, Bri?” Mrs. Bennett asked.

“He’s stuck in traffic,” I said.

“Not anymore,” Nick said running in. He came over to me.  He took the phone.

“Hello, yes, this is her husband, what, okay, I understand, I’m switching over to speaker,” Nick said.  He switched the phone over to speaker.

“Okay, Britney, are you there?” the lady asked.

      “Yes,” I said breathing heavily.

“Britney, I told your husband that you don’t have time to get to the hospital, the baby must be delivered now, Mr. Carter,” the lady said.

      “It’s Nick,” Nick said.

“As in the Backstreet Boy Nick Carter,” the lady said.

“Yes, please don’t tell any reporters, okay,” Nick said.

“I won’t, Nick, lay her on the floor, Mrs. Bennett,” the lady said.

      “Yes,” Mrs. Bennett said.

“Get up behind her and support her,” the lady said.  Brian, Howie, AJ, and Kevin came in.

      “What’s going on,” Brian said.

“She’s having the baby, it has to be delivered now, Brian, Howie, get some blankets, Kev, call my parents on your cell phone, AJ, get the first aid kit,” Nick said.

Howie and Brian got some blankets. Kevin called Nick’s parents.  AJ got the first aid kit.

“What do I do now?” Nick asked.

“Okay, spread a blanket on the floor in front of her and one over her legs,” the lady said.

      “What’s your name?” I asked.

      “It’s Tracy,” the lady said.

“Brian, help Mrs. Bennett support her,” Nick said.

“Oh god,” I said as a contraction came.

“Nick, has she dilated?” Tracy asked.  Nick checked.

“I can see the head coming,” Nick said.

“Okay, Bri, next contraction, start pushing,” Tracy said.

The contraction came and I started pushing. Kevin picked Emily up and held her as they watched.

“Okay, it’s coming, come on, Bri, you can do it, babe,” Nick said. I kept pushing.  I pushed until a wail filled the house.  Nick sat up with the baby.  He wrapped the baby in a blanket.

“It’s a boy,” Nick said.  I breathed heavily.  The paramedics arrived and got me ready.

      “Congratulations, Britney,” Tracy said.

“Thank you, Tracy, for everything,” I said.

“You’re welcome, glad to help, bye,” Tracy said. AJ hung up the phone.  They loaded me and the baby in the ambulance.  Nick got in with me and we went to the hospital. Twenty minutes later, I was in a room asleep.  The baby was in the nursery.  Nick was sitting by the bedside watching me sleep.  I opened my eyes and looked at him.

      “Hey beautiful,” Nick said.

      “Hey yourself,” I said smiling.

“We have a son,” Nick said.

“Yeah, what do you want to name him?” I asked.

“How about Jason Robert Carter,” Nick said.

“Perfect,” I said.  The door opened and the nurse came in with the baby.  Emily was behind her with Brian.  Brian left.  Emily got up and Nick picked up Jason and we gathered at the bed.  Nick laid Jason in my arms and we all gathered together as a family.

The End!!
